The ARC of Monroe County
is a non-profit organization, made
up of parents, professionals, and con-
cerned citizens. Established in 1962, ARC exists to improve the welfare of all citizens with developmental disabilities while providing and promoting services on their behalf.
Monroe County has nearly 4,000 residents with developmental disabilities, ranging in age from infants to senior citizens. Many of these people live at home with family members or in apartments where they are given assistance in making appropriate choices. Others live in group homes.
Individuals with developmental disabilities face many issues when planning for adult life:
- residential options
- educational choices
- vocational opportunities
- adult/senior citizen activities
- leisure/recreational functions
- retirement options
- adequate transportation
- handicap accessibility
More than a dozen group homes are located throughout Monroe County, but the need for additional housing and advocacy assistance continues to grow.
