For Children and adults with developmental challenges and their families. You're not alone. Let's make the journey together!
Who needs advocacy
services?
When a child is diagnosed with a developmental
disability, life changes for everyone in the family.
Unique challenges are present requiring accomodations,
perseverance, and sacrifice in order to make life a fulfilling
experience for the person with the disability. Advocacy comes from
the heart and is instinctive to most families. Advocacy
emerges out of knowledge and must be cultivated into a skill.
Sometimes families need help to become effective self-advocates. The
educational, medical, and other service systems can seem complicated and
intimidating to families. This is the main reason The ARC of Monroe County is
available today -- The ARC offers the opportunity to learn, to be supported, to assist
your family member in receiving what he/she needs, and to support others.
Advocacy is an on-going effort and commitment, which begins at birth and is a necessary
part of each family's life together. It is The ARC's promise to you to assist you in this process.
How does a family receive advocacy services?
It's simple: dial 734-241-5881 and ask for the assistance of an advocate. If an advocate is not immediately available to speak to you, your call will be returned as soon as possible. There is no charge for this service. Whatever your needs, The ARC is willing to assist. You are encouraged to visit our office, and home or school visitations can be arranged, if needed. Telephone consultations are also
a viable alternative.
